Gorgeous old Persian Heriz carpet from NW Iran. This rug is out of a European estate. Almost no signs of wear and overall condition is excellent. Even the white cotton fringe, often the first part of a rug to show issues, is in superb condition.

These are rugged rugs and very resilient to wear.  Last photo, with Morgan silver dollar, shows the back of the rug.

Stunning art for your floor!

The Heriz or Serapi medallion design is one of the most popular in the world, and originated in the northwest of Iran. This motif favors a large central medallion and a wide border. This one displays a rich mix of colors including crimson, orange gold, blue, ivory and olive. 1960s. Exact size is 9 ft. 8in. by 6 ft. 5 in., which is an excellent size for most living and dining rooms.

These rugs are well known for their durability and have been popular with collectors for over a century. Natural wool woven onto natural cotton in the mountains of the Heriz Province.

This is an authentic Heriz rug from Iran — not a knockoff from India of dubious quality. (Very common now — especially with the embargo against Iran.)  These rugs are produced in the villages scattered across the slopes of Mount Sabalan, northeast of Tabriz.

One of the alleged reasons for the toughness of Heriz carpets is that Mount Sabalan is sitting on a major deposit of copper. Trace copper in the drinking water of the sheep supposedly produces high quality wool. The copper makes the wool stronger and far more resilient than wool from other areas (so the explanation goes). Heriz rugs originate in towns such as Ahar, Heris, Mehraban, Sarab, Serapi, Bakhshaish, and Gorevan.

SOLD — Large Grand Persian Medallion Heriz Rug — 11 ft. 5 in. by 8 ft. $969

To view available rugs and art, please go to the SHOP section in the main menu.

Gorgeous old Persian Heriz carpet from NW Iran. This rug came out of a European estate.

Because it was dusty, I had it professionally washed soon after snapping the photos. Colors are perhaps a little brighter after the wash but no real changes –other than it is clean and dust free. The fringes are also a little whiter although they were not bleached. (Bleaching weakens the cotton and causes long term problems.)

Some scattered minor wear (penultimate photo) but overall condition is very good. Some minimal abrash (color variegation) in the reds and blues, which lends the carpet a painterly effect. (The faint line crossing the rug in the 3 wide shots is a shadow from an overhead cable.) These artistic and traditional Persian Heriz rugs are rugged and very resilient to wear.

SOLD — Qashqai Leopard — Cheetah Rug — 6 ft. 5 in. by 3 ft. 4 in. –$729

Wonderful condition with almost no signs of wear. Dramatic stalking gold feline on red field. Stylized flowers surround the leopard or cheetah, all framed with tan corners and black and ivory border.

Some abrash (color variegation from different dye batches) in the red field, with which the weaver creates an artistic painterly effect. A small dye diffusion, barely noticeable, from an earlier wash, is the only flaw.

Large wild cats are a traditional Qashqai motif but they almost always depict lions. In regards to condition, quality, artistic detail, this carpet is exceptional. (Out of my personal collection.)

Woven by the Qashqai tribe in the Zagros Mountains of southwest Iran. 1960s — 1970s. 100% wool. The size is  6 ft. 5 in. by 3 ft. 4 in.

SOLD — Large Turkish Taspinar Rug — 11 ft. 9 in. by 6 ft. — $549

To view available rugs and art, please go to the SHOP section in the main menu.

Mesmerizing large Turkish rug from Taspinar in central Anatolia. Strong bold colors with very fine detail and elegant weaving. This is a large and dramatic size for this style of rug, which are often woven as a wedding dowry or as an important family centerpiece.

Taspinar is located in central Turkey just south of the world famous region of Cappadocia– one of Turkey’s most touted tourist destinations. It is also located fairly close to Konya, which has been a source of illustrious Turkish carpets for several centuries.

This area in Anatolia produces a high quality wool with a silky feel. The rich lanolin in the wool is what makes the rug feel as if it was woven from silk. 100% natural wool. The design combines bold geometric elements with displays of plants and foliage.

Good condition with some normal wear in areas. Some spots of reddish dye diffusion, mainly on one end (photo 2). Because of the dramatic colors, primarily crimson and deep blue, the diffusion smudges are hardly noticeable. 1950s.

A fairly supple weave so not ideal for a super high foot traffic area without a simple mesh pad to help keep it in place on slippery tile or hardwood.

11 ft. 9 in. by 6 ft. Please email me with questions or to arrange a purchase. You can also buy it right now in the Shop.

SOLD — Moroccan Berber Tribal Rug — 10 ft. by 5 ft. — $525

To view available rugs and art, please go to the SHOP section in the main menu.

Eye-catching vintage Berber rug from Morocco with an array of diamonds and icons, forming a scintillating motif. As with many of the tribal Moroccan pieces from the Atlas Mountain region, there are tassels added on one end only.

Overall excellent condition with very minor wear. Natural saffron or turmeric dyes were used to create the deep yellow gold colors. Additional colors are crimson, ivory, green, and soft blue accents. Exact size is 10 ft. 3 in. by 4 ft. 10 in. 1960s.

Woven from 100% wool. Original ends and side cords — which are in very good condition. Vintage tribal Moroccan rugs are less common and highly sought after by collectors, dealers, and designers.

This rug has a soft woolen weave suitable for tribal nomads. The rug can be easily unrolled for a celebration, a meal, or to serve as the floor of a tent. In preparation for a move, the rug can be quickly folded and packed away.

This rug is perhaps not a suitable choice for a high traffic area of a home. It would work well in a bedroom or office. Add pillows and this rug could serve as a nomadic enclave for visitors to sit on the floor and share a meal.

Please contact me with questions or to arrange a purchase.  $525.    Shipping is $43 or free local pickup.

SOLD — Large Persian Medallion Sarouk Rug — 13 ft. by 9 ft. 6 in. — $699

To view available rugs and art, please go to the SHOP section in the main menu.

Large traditional floral Persian Sarouk carpet from central Iran. Natural wool woven onto natural cotton. Very tightly knotted weave so the rug is heavy and dense, and it can be used in a high foot traffic area, including under a dining room table.

Condition is good with some minor wear across the pile. Fringes and side cords are in excellent condition. There are a couple of small nicks in the wool pile about the size of a nickel. I am providing closeup photos (with coin) to indicate size. The structure is intact so there are no holes or weak spots; these are strictly cosmetic flaws, which could be re-piled. As they are hardly noticeable without nose on the rug, they don’t warrant concern.

The dyes are of a high quality and not overbearing. Fairly muted red with balanced blues, ivory, tans, and green rounding out the color palette.

Mahal, Mashad, Kashan, Tabriz, Isfahan, Kashmar are all cities in Iran that all produce a version of this intricate medallion rug. This one is a Sarouk from the late 1940s – 1950s. This rug is guaranteed to be Persian, it is not a copy from Pakistan, India or China, etc.

To view available rugs and art, please go to the SHOP section in the main menu.

Plush vintage triple medallion village rug from central Iran. Thick wool pile with minor wear. Some wear on one fringe and a little normal wear on the side cords. 1930s.

Natural wool on cotton warp. Two stylized human figures on the blue-black primary field.

The rug was professionally washed. No signs of any bleeding or dye problems when it was washed. A very solid rug that could be used anywhere — including a high foot traffic area. Most likely woven by a Kurdish or Azeri weaver in the Hamadan district of Iran.

To view available rugs and art, please go to the SHOP section in the main menu.

Mesmerizing old vintage rug with blue and mint medallions on a red magenta field.

Possibly too bold for some–but the colors are really electrifying if you want to enliven a living space. Colors approach a psychedelic intensity.

Very good condition with even minor wear to the pile. Pile was clipped short by the weaver to show off the triple medallion Kazak motif and prominent floral borders. 100% natural wool. 1960s. Most likely from Karabakh (also Karabagh) region or Soviet Dagestan. Or possibly eastern Anatolia.

This is a rug that would make a statement in any room although not a perfect match for a paisley sofa and floral wallpaper. And not for the faint of heart. Exact size is 8 ft. 9 in. by 6 ft. 3 in.

SOLD — Turkoman Large Tent Rug — 9 ft. 9 in. by 6 ft. 3 in. — $479

To view available rugs and art, please go to the SHOP section in the main menu.

Beautiful old vintage Turkoman main rug in good overall condition. Some minor wear in a few small areas but no holes or structural problems. No stains. Unusual lovely blues mixed in with the traditional Turkoman madder reds.

Wool on cotton warp. Typically, the weavers use all wool but cotton structure allows for a finer weave, and tends to maintain shape a bit better over the decades. This carpet was skillfully woven, the wool kept short to show off the wonderful Bukhara gul design.

The rug has been professionally washed–it is clean and ready to use. Soft supple wool.

This rug was woven in Afghanistan or Turkmenistan. 1960s. The size is 9 ft. 9 in. by 6 ft. 3 in. Not necessarily a good choice for a heavy foot traffic area or under a table. Moderate foot traffic is a better option.

Turkoman rugs are typically a nomadic textile made by tribes in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and northeastern Iran. These tribes include the Salor, Saryk, Tekke, Youmut, Arabchi, Chodor, and Ersari tribes. These rugs tend to have a background that is red or redish-brown in color, and the motif is usually geometric.

Most Turkoman rugs feature the octagonal gul –either as large medallions or in a repeating array.

Gul is an old Persian word for flower or rose, and also appears in Turkish. Traditionally, distinctive guls indicated individual tribal affiliations.

The price of this rug is $479. Shipping is $47 or free with local pickup.

Electrifying tribal rug from the Zagros Mountains of southwest Iran. This one showcases the boldest and most vibrant color palette possible in a handmade textile. One end is slightly curved upward in the photos because the rug was rolled up in storage, but this will flatten out as soon as it is walked on.

Very heavy rugged wool rug that is almost like a plank in its solidity. Could be used in a high foot traffic area of the home.

Fantastic geometric design with many intricate details. Traditional Qashqai medallions with tree of life motifs, and multiple icons arrayed across the entire carpet. Ivory, crimson, orange, green, and black are the primary colors. Classic Qashqai barber pole side cords.

The four ivory horse heads were inspired by the ancient statues at the ruins of Persepolis (closeup in fifth photo). Qashqai nomads often grazed their sheep near the site of the city, and incorporated its art into the iconography of their wool rugs.  100% natural wool. 1950s. Out of my personal collection.

Good condition with scattered wear and a few small repairs. A small 2-inch rather crude repair, most likely done in the village, is located in the central medallion (shown in penultimate photo–but not easy to spot). Photo with coin shows the back of the rug.

Despite small imperfections, this is a vibrant and powerful piece of tribal art work. Fantastic statement piece– mind boggling art for your floor!

The Qashqai are a confederation of 5 distinct tribal groups who banded together in a political alliance in the 19th century. Another confederation — the Khamseh (which means 5 in Arabic) — formed in the 19th century as a counterbalance to the Qashqai. The rugs of all of these tribes are quite similar in many respects.

The size is 8 ft. 8 in. by 5 ft. 5 in.  The rug is $769. Shipping is $63 or free with local pickup.

SOLD — Persian Tabriz with Mahi Motif and Magenta Diamond — 11 ft. by 8 ft. — $949

Gallery

To view available rugs and art, please go to the SHOP section in the main menu.

Striking Persian carpet from Tabriz in northern Iran. Fabulous condition!

The field design surrounding the central ivory medallion is a form of the intricate Herati arabesque that decorates many rugs in the Middle East. In the Tabriz area it is also known as a ‘mahi’ design–or fish–because the details in the pattern look like a school of fish flashing by.

I have had a few of these mahi Tabriz carpets over the years but they were typically pretty worn. This one is in fantastic condition with only the slightest hint of wear in a couple of tiny spots inside the amazing magenta diamond. The fringes are in absolutely pristine condition on both ends; white and unworn. Long cotton fringes often get nicked up and soiled in the life of a handmade carpet.

This is an amazing motif, in my opinion, with its combination of field details, its central floral medallion, and its elegant wide borders–all enfolded by a magenta geometric diamond that jets across the rug like a lightening bolt.

The motif is sometimes copied in Pakistani rug workshops; however, they tend to work with a completely different color and dye palette, and also employ different weaving techniques. Because of this, distinguishing the Persian Tabriz carpets from their Pakistani imitators is typically straightforward.

Exact size is 11 ft. 1 in. by 7 ft. 9 in. A vintage rug from around the 1970s but in spectacular condition. There is some lively abrash (variegation in dye colors) in the dark indigo blues of the borders. The rug displays a mix of natural and quality synthetic dyes. The blues and some of the accent colors are natural while the neon magenta and orange colors cannot be duplicated with vegetable or natural dyes.

Price of this Tabriz carpet is $949.
