Tribal style kilim woven by hand on a loom.
A relatively contemporary textile as it does not appear to have been used much at all. The crease in the center is from being folded and stored — it will disappear once the kelim is used and walked on.
Woven in Afghani style with a bold range of colors that gives it a strong Southwestern look.
This kilim is woven from 100% natural wool, which is traditional for many flat-weave textiles from Central Asia, Turkey and the Middle East.
Colors include red, olive green, black, yellow, white, black and purple.
Overall condition is excellent. Exact size is 8 ft. by 5 ft. 7 in.
This is a tribal kelim, a type of flat-weave textile, and not a typical pile rug. Since it is more supple than a rug, it is not ideal for any slippery floor with active foot traffic unless you put down a simple pad.
It would be ideal for covering and decorating a hard floor, and could be used for yoga, a children’s play mat, or quietly sitting and sipping tea.
It could even be mounted on the wall as a tapestry as it’s much lighter than a pile rug.
Kilims are favored by nomadic tribal people because they are easier to fold and carry than pile rugs. They are placed on the ground and used to sit on, eat, and drink tea.
