Large Persian Kashan Rug — 13 ft. 2 in. by 9 ft. 4 in.

Classic Persian Kashan Medallion Rug!

Out of stock

Beautiful vintage blue and red Persian Kashan medallion rug from central Iran.

Colors include navy blue, crimson, turquoise, white, olive, butterscotch, green, gray, and gold.

The rug is in very good condition with limited wear on the wool pile. There are a couple of small areas near the center, difficult to see without putting your nose on the rug, with more wear — and I’ve included a closeup of the most noteworthy spot (see the penultimate CU photo).

The cotton fringes and side cords are in excellent shape. No holes or weak spots in the rug that would compromise its use.

It’s a finely knotted short pile carpet but can be used in a high foot traffic area of the home or under a table and chairs.

This color combination is quite traditional in Kashan carpets.

Natural wool woven onto natural cotton. 1960s.

Last photo with Morgan silver dollar shows the backside of the carpet.

Exact size is 13 ft. 2 in. by 9 ft. 4 in.

Kashan weavers are reknowned for their classic floral styles and intricate weaving.

Kashan rugs are some of the most illustrious of the refined urban carpets woven in Iran. The Kashan weaving tradition is a direct legacy from the golden age of Persian carpets, which dates to the late 16th and 17th centuries during the reign of the famous patron of the arts, Shah Abbas. He was the principle monarch of the Safavid Dynasty and ruled from 1588 to 1629.

The Abbas reign marked a peak in Persian artistic achievement. Under his patronage, carpet weaving became a major industry for export, including to Europe, and fine Persian rugs began to appear in the homes of wealthy European burghers. (They are often depicted in the paintings of that era.)

Many of the archetypal Persian carpet designs originated in this period. The basic inspiration and model for most city carpets is the Garden of Paradise.

The majority of antique Kashan rugs available today were woven from the second half of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century. During this period, the finest Kashan carpets were commissioned for individual homes or produced for domestic and foreign markets.

The best Kashan carpets have always used superior quality wools.
