Description

ON HOLD UNTIL MONDAY JUNE 17TH

Exceptionally large old tribal rug from the Zagros Mountains of Southwest Iran.

Good overall condition with some general normal wear on the wool pile. No holes, or weakened areas or repairs. (I’ve shown closeups of the wear on the carpet.)

This carpet is woven as the Qashqai and Khamseh nomads wove them a hundred years ago: it is fairly supple and designed for a nomadic life style raising sheep in the mountains of Persia.

A geometric rug woven with traditional Khamseh and Qashqai medallions; small birds and animal icons; and stylized flowers, leaves and tree-of-life motifs.

Darker earth tone colors including reddish brown, dark green, white, and shades of blue.

Woven from 100% natural wool — including the warp and weft — this is a soft and supple rug in the nomadic tradition.

Last photo with Morgan silver dollar displays the back of the rug. The carpet is out of a European estate.

The exact size is 11 ft. 6 in. by 8 ft. 1950s. Very hard to find tribal rugs in this size and with these more subtle colors.

The Qashqai are a confederation of 5 distinct tribal groups who banded together in a political alliance in the 19th century. A similar confederation — the Khamseh (which means 5 in Arabic) — formed in the 19th century as a counterbalance to the Qashqai. The rugs of all of these tribes are quite similar in many respects.

Shipping will be $55 within the continental U.S.
