Antique Kurdish medallion anchor rug from northern Iran. Even wear on the wool pile with some low spots. Because of the motif, reminiscent of a ship’s anchor, these are often labeled as ‘anchor’ rugs by collectors.
Natural wool on cotton warp. All natural dyes. 1900 to 1925.
Considering the age, the condition is very good. No holes or weak spots, organic colors still vibrant. The side cords were professionally replaced recently and are in excellent shape. Some scattered wear on the cotton kilim endings but in general they are intact.
The rug was professionally washed. Despite the decades of use, this is still a solid rug that could be used anywhere in the home or office. (After flourishing for so long, I think it probably deserves a nice quite spot with gentle use.)
Almost certainly woven by a tribal Kurdish weaver, possibly in the Hamadan district of Iran. 6 ft. 5 in. by 4 ft.
Phantasmagoric art for the floor!
