Description

Antique Caucasian rug from the Karabakh region, which is enfolded by modern Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The rug is dated 1331 in the Islamic calendar, which converts to 1913 in the Gregorian calendar.

As well as the date and the serrated red medallions, the rug has iconic images of mountain goats (extra photos on request).

Condition is fairly good with some serious corrosion in certain areas of the brown. Various iron oxide natural pigment are commonly used in browns, and this often corrodes the wool after many, many decades.

Extensive professional reweaves have been done on the final couple inches of inch end. The restoration is a superb match to the original carpet and only stands out since both ends with the fringes are now in perfect shape.

There are several small repairs in the blue field but these are hard to spot. The most extensive part of the restoration has been done and the rug only really needs some repiling in the browns. Or it is perfectly fine as is.

As the rug is over a hundred years old with some aging issues, it can be used on the floor but only in a quiet area of the home.

There is one synthetic red dye, most likely a form of fuchsine (synthesized in 1858). A faint dye diffusion in one small area of the border from the fuchsine; the rest of the dyes appear natural.

Fine natural wool on cotton warp. 1913.

Exact size is 8 ft. 4 in. by 4 ft. 4 in.
