Description

Purple or violet borders encompassing salmon field and indigo blue medallion. Exquisite floral decorations with a quartet of butterflies floating around the medallion.

Condition is excellent with only minor signs of wear. Really difficult to find these old Chinese classics in such fabulous condition. Fringe is very good with some yellowing of the cotton from decades of normal aging.

Rug is thick and heavy for its size and could be placed in a high foot traffic area. The combination of design elements and colors makes this carpet a real show stopper. Natural wool on natural cotton. Superb dyes that do not ‘bleed’. Excellent room size at 7 ft. 4 in. by 4 ft. 1 in.

Walter Nichols is the best known manufacturer of these Chinese rugs, but other companies were weaving very similar high quality rugs for the American home in the 1930s. They are highly collectible today and noted for their ironclad durability. (One jaundiced rug ‘expert’ lamented that they are difficult to eradicate because they are virtually indestructible.)

“The Nichols name has come to be used almost synonymously with the ‘Chinese deco’ rugs manufactured in Tientsin in the 1920s and 1930s. Nichols did not originate the Chinese deco style, but he did a great deal to popularize it and to maintain its high standards of manufacture.”

The era of Nichols rugs ended after the expanded Japanese invasion of China in 1937, the global conflagration of the Second World War, and the Communist Revolution in mainland China in 1949. However, the rugs and their Art Deco styling continued to influence rug production in the People’s Republic of China.

Shipping is $55 for this very solid rug.
