    Description

Large mesmerizing village rug from Kelardasht in far north central Iran.

The overall condition is excellent with plush wool pile and no signs of wear. The carpet showcases a dazzling geometric motif with reindeer, birds, flowers, tree-of-life motifs, vases, memling guls, medallions, and goats.

Handwoven in far northern Iran using 100% natural wool for the pile and natural cotton for the warp and weft. The cotton fringes are done with a different technique at each end, but this is traditional for this region of Persia. Both ends are in excellent shape, as are the side cords.

The primary colors are a deep navy blue and crimson red with highlights of tan, green, black, yellow, ivory, and orange. Last photo with Morgan silver dollar shows the backside of the rug.

A superb tribal rug that is a great size for most rooms at 10 ft. 4 in. by 7 ft. 1 in. Out of a European estate.

Kelardasht is a town of 11,000 people in the Mazanderan province near Roodbarak. Although the area is mountainous, it is just to the south of the Caspian Sea. Ethnographically, the area is populated by an enclave of Northern Kurds.

Based on the rugs and the cluster of Northern Kurds around Kelardascht, some experts believe that these people are refugees pushed out of the Caucasus in the 19th and early 20th century, and may have originated near Karabagh.

Shipping is $69 within continental U.S.
