Large Persian Heriz Herati Motif — HOLD — 11 ft. 3 in. by 7 ft. 9 in.

Elegant Persian Heriz Carpet from a European Estate.

Out of stock

Large vintage Persian Heriz carpet from Northwest Iran in excellent overall condition.

Some minor wear on the wool pile and on the cotton fringes. (Closeup photos of the wear included.)

Natural wool woven onto natural cotton.

Last photo with Morgan silver dollar shows the backside of the rug.

The carpet has been professionally ‘end-stopped’, which you can see in the backside photo. This simple techniques protects vintage and antique rugs from weft unravel at the ends.

The rug is quite solid and can be used in a high foot traffic area of the home. Out of a European estate.

Fringes are a little soiled and the rug would pop with a wash but fine to use as is.

Main colors are crimson red, salmon, white, several shades of blue, gold, and an olive green.

Exact size is 11 ft. 3 in. by 7 ft. 9 in. 1940s — 1950s.

The design is a traditional Herati motif on a crimson field with a wide stylized Heriz border. A Herati design is a repeating pattern in oriental rugs that originated centuries ago.

The motif is based on an ancient Turkoman or Mongolian design — a geometric template featuring one flower surrounded by four leaves, which repeats across the carpet. This pattern originated around the late 15th century in what is now Northwest Afghanistan in the city of Herat (Herat was then part of Persia).

The pattern is often stylized, such as in this rug, so that you can’t make out individual flowers and leaves.

Heriz rugs are well known for their durability and have been popular with collectors for over a century. Natural wool woven onto natural cotton in the mountains of the Heriz Province.

This is an authentic Heriz rug from Persia. These rugs are produced in the villages scattered across the slopes of Mount Sabalan, northeast of Tabriz.

One of the alleged reasons for the toughness of Heriz carpets is that Mount Sabalan is sitting on a major deposit of copper. Trace copper in the drinking water of the sheep supposedly produces high quality wool. The copper makes the wool stronger and far more resilient than wool from other areas (so the claim goes).

Heriz rugs originate in towns such as Ahar, Heris, Mehraban, Sarab, Serapi, Bakhshaish, and Gorevan.
