    Description

Elegant vintage Persian handmade carpet from Mashad, Iran. Signed by the master weaver on one end.

Mashad is a major city in the Khorasan (also Khurasan) region of Persia, located in the northeast of the country. The name means ‘rising sun’. The carpets are somewhat similar to those from Sabzevar, which is about 220 kilometers to the west.

Beautiful rug with lovely colors and an intricate medallion & floral motif. The red field is more of a brick red — not a candy apple or crimson red — and it meshes nicely with the other colors.

Overall condition is excellent with a couple of small areas of pile wear. One one end, near the signature, there are some tiny yellow stains from turmeric, an edible plant (and dye), probably from a food sauce such as curry. It blends in and is only noticeable with nose on the rug (there is a close up photo).

Side cords and fringes are in great shape. The rug is extremely solid and can be used in a high foot traffic area or under a dining room table, etc.

Mashad weavers prefer rich plush colors, and the carpet features brick red, indigo blue, burnt orange, white, turquoise, grayish blue, burgundy, black, green, gold, and other highlights.

This is the kind of motif — a large medallion, elegant corners, and an arabesque of swirling vines and flowers — that many people have in mind when they think of a Persian carpet.

Tightly woven from natural wool and natural cotton. 1950s. Exact size is 11 ft. 9 in by 8 ft. 10 in.

Currently, I have several large handmade Persian carpets for sale. If you’re interested in a large Persian, this would be a good time because once these are gone I won’t be replacing them.

Shipping will be $69 with FedEx inside the continental U.S.

    Thank you.
