Description
Stunning, bold geometric Vis rug in excellent condition. (Also spelled Viss and Wiss)
Colors are quite vivid and include tomato red, navy, turquoise, and a gold – olive.
Very little signs of use. Minuscule wear. Wonderful shape.
Fringe and side cords are also in superb condition.
Extremely solid and well made rug that could be placed in any high foot traffic area or under a table and chairs. (Shame to hide it under a table, however.)
Small blue and golden icons of a mountain sheep (ram, goat, or reindeer) appears in each corner and in the center medallion of the rug. This is a traditional symbol often woven into the carpets from Vis. Usually the mountain sheep are blue and other colors are less common.
The Vis motif — with its traditional saturated colors and sharp angles — is one of the most distinctive in Iran. Woven in limited numbers in a small area, they are quite special in the oriental carpet trade. They are reminiscent of Caucasian carpets such as the Kazak rugs woven farther to the northwest.
Vis carpets are highly sought after by collectors and not easily found.
Natural wool woven onto natural cotton. 1970s. Exact size is 12 ft. 3 in. by 8 ft. 10 in.
Vis is a small town located near the city of Golpayegan, Iran — in the district of the same name.
Vis includes an eclectic mix of Kurds, Azeri (Turkish), and Bakhtiari nomadic people. These tribes have influenced the rugs and carpets produced in the city, which carry a dazzling and distinctive geometric tribal motif, typically rendered in bold crimson & blues.
Look for the small blue mountain goat or ram in each corner, another distinctive hallmark. They are similar to the Caucasian and Kazak rug designs so beloved by collectors.
Shipping will be $69 within the continental U.S.
