Description

Fascinating old Persian tribal rug from Southwest Iran with a traditional medallion motif. This design is typically attributed to the Yalameh but it could have been woven by other tribal members of the Qashqai confederation. The carpet is 100% wool, including the warp & weft; the barber-pole side cords, in this rug black & white, are a hallmark of the Qashqai.

The rug displays a wonderful terra cotta reddish brown with salmon, olive, ivory, dark brown, and yellow. Fairly even wear across the pile, which was cut short by the weaver to showcase the fabulous design.

As is true of many natural wool rugs from this region of Iran, the weave is fairly supple. A simple non-slip mesh pad will help keep the rug in place with normal use, but it is probably not a good choice for a high foot traffic area of the house. No holes or weak spots, bad odors, etc.

The horseback riders on white (and some brown) horses are brandishing the national flag of Iran, a tricolor with a clean field, which was in use from 1907 to 1980. The color order, from top to bottom, should be green, white and red bars. Some of the riders, however, hold an anomalous green, red, and white flag.

The size is is 9 ft. by 6 ft. 2 in. Out of my personal collection where I’ve kept it for about 20 years without ever using it on the floor–but only because I don’t have a spot for it! One of my favorite rugs, nonetheless. 1950s.
