Gorgeous Persian Borchelu Rug!

Description

Bold cheerful floral Persian Borchelu village rug with large medallion on multi-colored field. Excellent overall condition with very little signs of wear on the wool pile. Fringes and side cords are in very good condition. Like many village rugs, this carpet is a little out of square.

Very solid with thick soft wool pile. The rug lays quite flat, and could be used in a fairly high traffic area of the home

Borchelu rugs are often attributed to nomadic Kurdish weavers in northwest Iran. (However, in P.R.J. Ford’s book, Oriental Carpet Design, Ford argues that the ‘Borchalu’ are descended from Mongols!) It is widely agreed that their rugs were influenced by Armenian Lilihan rugs, and that is quite apparent when you view them side by side.

They also have some similarities to Mahal rugs woven near the city of Mahallat in the Markazi Province. (Mahal rugs also feature floral motifs, and Mahallat is often called the flower city of Iran.)

Natural wool woven onto cotton warp. 1970s. The exact size is 9 ft. 4in. by 4 ft. 6 in.
