Description
Wonderful vintage Persian garden panel rug motif with stylized flowers, prominent birds, and stately cypress trees.
This is a rarer version of the garden rug with floating diamonds and wide borders rather than repeating squares.
This carpet has notable pile damage on one end –I’ve shown the cosmetic problems in the photos. No holes and the rug is very solid.
The rug has been washed and the side cords redone. Other than the pile issues on the one end, the rug is in great shape and can be used in a high foot traffic area.
The price of the rug is marked down to reflect this condition issue.
Wonderful use of multiple design elements, including small medallions and half diamonds.
This was woven by a Bakhtiari or Luri tribal weaver in Western Iran. These are closely related tribal groups speaking similar dialects.
Aside from condition issue cited above, the side cords (recast) and fringes are in excellent shape.
Very solid and well crafted rug that can be used in a high foot traffic area or near an entrance.
Beautiful and well-balanced colors.
The garden panel motif is also known as a ‘khesti’ motif, and dates back several centuries in Iran. The Bakhtiari are masters of the design, but it is also woven by the Luri and the Qashqai, and occasionally in the cities of Qom and Tabriz.
Exact size is 9 ft. 10 in. by 4 ft. 10 in. Wool pile on cotton warp. 1960s.
Last photo with Morgan silver dollar shows the backside of the carpet.
The Bakhtiari tribe, numbering 800,000, inhabit an area of 67,000 sq. km that straddles the central Zagros Mountains in Iran. Although only about a third of the tribe is nomadic (the rest are settled agriculturists), the nomads embody the Bakhtiari cultural ideals.
