Description

Very solid handwoven Kurdish rug with medallions and charming ungulates — possibly goats or deer.

These are woven in the area around Bijar by Kurdish weavers in northwest Iran. Overall condition is excellent with some signs of pile wear. The rug has a small professional repair, which is shown in a closeup photo.

The rug is very heavy or its size with thick pile. Perfect for someone needing an anchor like runner for a high traffic area of the home.

Cotton fringes and side cords are in excellent shape.

Bijar rugs are known as ‘Iron Rugs’ for their durability. Thick natural wool pile woven on cotton warp and weft.

Exact size is 11 ft. 2 in. by 4 ft. 9 in. 1960s – 1970s.

Field color is a dark gold brown with muted green or teal, purple grape, black and fuchsia or pink highlights. Dark colors overall and a perfect carpet for a high foot traffic area of the home or office.

Kurdish weavers build on their traditions, producing high quality tribal pieces that are eye-catching, innovative, and durable.

The majority of the population in Iran is of Persian origin but there are a number of sizable minorities. One of these groups are the Kurds who live mainly in the western parts of the country in the provinces of Kurdistan, Zanjan and Kermanshah.

Traditionally they were nomads but today most are settled, practicing agriculture and stock farming. About five million Kurds live in Iran and large Kurdish areas can also be found in eastern Turkey and western Iraq.

This is a very thick and heavy rug. Shipping will be $69 within the continental U.S. Arranging a free pickup is a possible option, too.
