Traditional geometric rugs from the Middle East occasionally resemble Navajo textiles. Persian weavers have been crafting these designs for centuries — if not thousands of years.
This geometric motif is most common around the city of Shiraz and is typically woven by tribal groups such as the Qashqai and Khamseh Federation.
The carpet showcases tribal abrash (variegation in colors due to changes in the wool dye batch). This technique creates a painterly effect.
Good overall condition with scattered wear on the wool pile. Rug is a little out of square — very common in all wool village rugs. The wool contracts after decades pulling it out of its perfect rectangular shape.
Thick soft natural wool pile. No holes or weakened areas. Originating in a nomadic tradition, these rugs are more supple than many village rugs that use cotton for the structure.
Woven from 100% natural wool — including the warp and weft. Very solid rug and could be used in a high foot traffic area of the home. Thick and plush natural wool pile.
Photo with Morgan silver dollar displays the back of the rug.
The exact size is 6 ft. 4 in. by 4 ft. 1960s.
The Qashqai are a confederation of 5 distinct tribal groups who banded together in a political alliance in the 19th century.
Another confederation — the Khamseh (which means 5 in Arabic) — formed in the 19th century as a counterbalance to the Qashqai. The rugs of all of these tribes are quite similar in many respects.
