Description
Traditional Qashqai medallion tribal rug from the Zagros Mountains of Southwest Iran.
Carpet showcases a triple central medallion with numerous birds, peacocks, goats, sheep and animals in the field design. Tree-of-life images included as well.
Additional tribal medallions at the corners as well.
Overall condition is excellent with some minor signs of wear. Tribal abrash in the red and purplish field colors. Abrash is vareigation in the wool dye batches that produces a painterly impact.
The overall layout of the birds, animals and medallions is classic Qashqai carpet weaving. Very upbeat and cheerful rug.
Woven from 100% natural wool — including the warp and weft, which is typical for Qashqai tribal pieces. As these were nomadic people who raised sheep, not farmers who grew cotton, they use their own locally produced natural wool. That tradition generally continues.
Last photo with Morgan silver dollar displays the back of the rug.
The exact size is 10 ft. 1 in. by 6 ft. 6 in.
The Qashqai are a confederation of 5 distinct tribal groups who banded together in a political alliance in the 19th century.
Another confederation — the Khamseh (5 in Arabic) — formed in the 19th century as a counterbalance to the Qashqai. The rugs of all of these tribes are quite similar in many respects.
