Description
Charming and impressive tribal medallion rug from the Zagros Mountains of Southwest Iran.
Bold vibrant colors including red, orange, green, cream, salmon, black and blue.
Pleasing tribal abrash (variegation in wool dye batches) in the dark blue.
Although animal imagery in Qashqai rugs is very common, the weaver has crafted a whole range of critters into this carpet.
The animals include large gray brown deer; small cats, fish and birds; goats and oxen or yaks.
Fantastic overall condition with only the tiniest signs of wear.
Woven from 100% natural wool — including the warp and weft, which is typical for Qashqai tribal pieces.
As these were nomadic people who raised sheep, not cotton farmers, most of these tribal groups used their own locally produced natural wool.
Many traditional tribal groups relied on wool for the structure of the carpet instead of cotton. Settled villagers tended toward cotton for the warp and weft.
Last photo with Morgan silver dollar displays the back of the rug.
The exact size is 9 ft. 6 in. by 6 ft. 4 in. Fairly recent — twenty to thirty years old.
The Qashqai are a confederation of 5 distinct tribal groups who banded together in a political alliance in the 19th century.
Another confederation — the Khamseh (which means 5 in Arabic) — formed in the 19th century as a counterbalance to the Qashqai. The rugs of these tribes are quite similar in many respects.
