Description

This carpet motif is a Mazlaghan from the Hamadan District of central Iran. Mazlaghan is a tiny village east of Hamadan in the Karaghan area near Kerdar and Nobearan.

Excellent condition with few signs of wear or usage. Fringes and side cords are in great shape.

This carpet is very solid and sturdy, and can be placed in a high foot traffic area.

Wool hand woven onto cotton warp and weft. Exact size is 6 ft. 9 in. by 4 ft. 5 in. 1970s.

Photo with Morgan silver dollars shows the backside of the carpet.

The weavers in this locale have been weaving an eye-catching version of this motif going back at least into the 19th century. This one features a bold medallion encased in red and white on a black field. Colors include red, black, white, green and burgundy.

The motif, with its serrated edges, looks like a lightening bolt — one of the most original and distinctive of tribal rug designs.

These handmade works of art, dating back thousands of years, are a disappearing art form. Many of the cultures that weave these rugs are losing the skills and traditions that have ensured their continuity.

Shipping will be $43 within the continental U.S.
