Description

Fabulous pictorial tribal lion rug from the Zagros Mountains of Southwest Iran.

Probably woven around the city of Abadeh as it is finely woven and the weaver used cotton for the warp. Many of the Qashqai have settled in this city.

The carpet is mint condition with no signs of wear. 1970s.

Abadeh is located between the large cities of Shiraz and Isfahan in the Fars Province.

Abadeh weavers were influenced by the Qashqai nomads who spent their summers pasturing their animals in the area. The carpets or often woven in red or burgundy combined with blue and various accent colors.

The rugs usually have a large hexagon in the middle with a medallion at the corners, a variant of the Heybatlou pattern. The field is often covered with small images of birds, sheep, oxen, cats and other animals along with trees and flowers.

Abadeh weavings are high quality carpets — very firm, solid and durable.

Last photo with Morgan silver dollar displays the back of the rug.

The exact size is 5 ft. 6 in. by 3 ft. 9 in.

The Qashqai — sometimes spelled Ghashghai — are a confederation of 5 distinct tribal groups who banded together in a political alliance in the 19th century.

Another confederation — the Khamseh (5 in Arabic) — formed in the 19th century as a counterbalance to the Qashqai. The rugs of all of these tribes are quite similar in many respects.
