Description

Impressive sumouk flat-weave textile featuring stylized animals that could be gryphons, birds, or horses.

The primary colors are a yellow gold, brick red, and bluish green, and appear to be natural dyes. The colors are bright but not harsh.

Deftly hand-woven from natural wool by a Qashqai weaver in the Zagros Mountains of southwest Iran.

Very good overall condition with some wear on the side cords.

Exact size is 8 ft. 4 in. by 5 ft. 10 in. 1970s.

This textile can be used on the floor in a quiet area of the home or on the wall as a tapestry. Because it is not a thick pile rug, it is not suitable for a high foot traffic area of the house.

This textile could also be classified as a kelim as the threads have not been left loose on the backside as is typically done with a traditional sumak.

The weaving — using a weft-wrapping technique — is similar in look to embroidery known as jajim or cicim in Turkish.

Most sumak rugs are woven in the Russian Caucasus regions and Turkey. They are less common among the tribal groups of Iran although sometimes woven by the Shahsavan and Qashqai.

Shipping is $34 within the continental U.S.
