Amazing old Qashqai menagerie rug with numerous birds and animals. First time I’ve seen depictions of yaks or water buffalo, and horses on a Qashqai rug. Also, deer and many birds are incorporated into the design. Traditional Qashqai medallion motif and icons. Woven in Southwest Iran in the Zagros Mountains near the city of Shiraz.
Four corner medallions surrounding a trio of central medallions on a red and navy blue field. 100% natural wool. 1950s. Out of my personal collection.
This rug has been professionally washed. Fairly good condition but with general signs of normal wear on several areas of the wool pile. There are several small professional repairs along one side of the rug. In addition, there are two small black patches on the back of the rug to support repairs but they are not visible from the front.
The pile was cut short to showcase the outstanding design. Despite the overall wear and small repairs, the rug is solid for its size and can handle normal foot traffic.
A vibrant and powerful piece of tribal art work!
The Qashqai are a confederation of 5 distinct tribal groups who banded together in a political alliance in the 19th century. Another confederation — the Khamseh (which means 5 in Arabic) — formed in the 19th century as a counterbalance to the Qashqai. The rugs of these tribes are quite similar in many respects.
