Description
Very heavy antique Persian long runner! The motif is Sarouk – Lilihan medallion floral but weave technique indicates it was woven in the Northwest near Heriz.
Dyes appear all natural with some village color abrash (variegation in color due to changes in the local dye batch) in the reds.
The rug will flatten out perfectly — it has been rolled up for a few years in storage.
The rug has a lot of even scattered wear but remains extremely solid and durable. It can be placed in a very active hallway without concern. Very rugged construction.
No holes or weak areas. The side cords have been recently recast, which is commonly done on old oriental carpets to maintain their value and weave integrity.
Heriz rugs are woven in the East Azerbaijan Province of Iran and are known for durability.
This a medium thick rug — dense and heavy for its size.
This is a perfect rug for someone needing a runner that will not be knocked around by large dogs, active children, etc. Fine for near an entrance or any active foot traffic area of the home. Nobody kicks Heriz rugs around.
Primary colors are red, blue, tan, white, green, black and various accent colors.
This carpet will last 75 more years or your money back.
Natural wool woven onto natural cotton. Last photo with Morgan silver dollar shows the back of the rug.
Exact size is 14 ft. 5 in. by 3 ft. 2 in. 1930s.
Heriz rugs are well known for their durability and have been popular with collectors for over a century.
These rugs are produced in the villages scattered across the slopes of Mount Sabalan, northeast of Tabriz.
One of the alleged reasons for the toughness of Heriz carpets is that Mount Sabalan is sitting on a major deposit of copper. Trace copper in the drinking water of the sheep supposedly produces high quality wool. The copper makes the wool stronger and far more resilient than wool from other areas (so the claim goes).
Heriz rugs originate in towns such as Ahar, Heris, Mehraban, Sarab, Serapi, Bakhshaish, and Gorevan.
Shipping will be $55 within the continental U.S. Very heavy for its size. Possible pickup in Northern California as well.
