Red, black, white, blue, tan, and green geometric tribal runner with stylized guardian dogs arrayed around the medallions. The rug and animals has a Native American look to the design although the tribal rug traditions of Iran and Azerbaijan are completely independent and much older.
Most likely woven in a village in the Meshgin Shahr region of northwest Iran or across the border in the former Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan. (The province within NW Iran is also named Azerbaijan, complicating the picture.)
Azeri weavers predominate in the region, and the traditional motifs are shared with Azerbaijan and the Shirvan carpet production area. These are typically known as Meshkin carpets.
Overall good condition with quite a bit of even wear on the wool pile. Fringes and the side cords are in very good shape.
Despite the wear from decades of normal use the rug is very solid and can be used in a high foot traffic area of the home.
Vintage rug from the 1950s.
Natural wool with cotton warp and weft. Exact size is 9 ft. by 4 ft.
Shipping is $34 within continental U.S.
