Description

Beautiful full pile Persian runner with strong colors and thick pile.

The rug features a vivid blue field with a red, light blue and white Herati motif. I am currently selling several of my Persian carpets with the Herati field pattern– complementary in pattern and colors.

Condition is excellent with very little signs of wear on the wool pile. The wool is relatively thick and plush. The side cords and fringes are in very good shape.

Natural wool on natural cotton. 1960s 1970s.

Exact size is 11 ft. by 3 ft. 8 in.

Last photo with Morgan silver dollar shows the backside of the carpet.

The design is a traditional Herati motif on a dark field with a stylized floral border. A Herati design is a repeating pattern in oriental rugs that originated centuries ago.

The motif is based on an ancient Turkoman or Mongolian design — a geometric template featuring one flower surrounded by four leaves, which repeats across the carpet. This pattern originated around the late 15th century in what is now Northwest Afghanistan in the city of Herat (Herat was then part of Persia).

The pattern is often stylized so that you can’t make out individual flowers and leaves. Sometimes the leaves look like leaping fish and the pattern is called ‘mahi’ after the Farsi word for fish. Nonetheless, it’s the same pattern done in thousands of different artistic interpretations. Once you know to look for it, you’ll see it in many oriental carpets.

Malayer region rugs demonstrate good variety and quality, and are highly regarded by collectors. Malayer (also Malayir) is south of Hamadan and west of the Arak Sarouk rug crafting area in Iran.

Shipping is $34 within the continental U.S.
