Description

Wonderful old Persian Sarouk runner from central Iran. Often these village rugs, which are less formal than many Sarouks, are labeled as Sarough or Mahal in the rug trade.

Excellent overall condition with almost no signs of wear. Dyes are very high quality and appear to be all natural, which is not common in Persian rugs after the 1930s and 1940s.

The side cords and fringes are also in excellent shape with only a little minor wear on the cotton fringes.

Exact size is 10 ft. 7 in. by 3 ft. 10 in. Natural wool pile on cotton warp. 1950s.

Quite thick and heavy; a runner that will not be kicked around and will last generations. Solid and impressive.

Sarouk carpets derive their name from an obscure Persian village located near Arak (formerly Sultanabad). Over a short span this village produced some of the most highly regarded Persian weavings of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Despite their varied design elements, these rugs are easily recognizable.

The designs also show similarities with Lilihan and Mahal rugs.

Sarouk rugs (also Saruk) are some of the most esteemed and popular of all the classic floral Persian rugs. They display elegant style and surprising durability. Carpets woven in the Sarouk region typically feature curvilinear vines and bouquets of flowers.

Last photo with Morgan silver dollar shows the back of the carpet.
