Description

Enchanting vintage village prayer rug handwoven in the town of Ghiordes (Gordes), northeast of Izmir in western Anatolia. The prayer rugs of Ghiordes, along with those of Kula and Ladik, are highly prized in the Middle East, Europe and the US.

The muted colors, especially the purple and rose red, have softened over the years from light and age. The purple is now more of a grape; other colors include brick red, green, olive green, white, and tan.

This Ottoman style prayer rug motif, emulating the mihrab of a Mosque, dates back at least into the early 1800s.

Very good overall condition with moderate even wear across the wool pile in the center of the rug. The wide borders are in excellent shape and the rug has been professionally end-stopped (see the last photo of the back).

Woven from 100% natural wool, using cotton for the warp and weft. The rug is fairly supple and flexible.

Turkey produces many fabulous rugs and kelims.

Last photo with Morgan silver dollar displays the back of the rug.

The exact size is 7 ft. 7 in. by 4 ft. 1 in. 1940s.

Shipping is $34 within the continental U.S. Or free pickup in Tucson, AZ.
