    Description

Eye dazzling old village carpet from northwest Iran near the border with Azerbaijan.

This is a traditional Karajeh carpet motif, with its distinctive hooked medallions and intricate design elements. Certain similarities to Caucasian and Shirvan rugs

Karajeh rugs are closely related to the Heriz rugs from the same region. Colors are generally in the reds, blue, grape, and salmon color palette.

Very good overall condition with some scattered wear on the wool pile and ends.  This rug came out of a European estate.            Also spelled Karaja and Karedje in some texts.

Photos include close-ups of areas of wear. Both ends have been professionally end-stopped to prevent weft unravel. (see photo of the back of the rug). Despite some wear the rug remains very solid. No holes or weakened areas.

Wool woven onto cotton warp. Intricate eye-dazzling motif with rich colors.

Exact size is 8 ft. 9 in. by 4 ft. 6 in. 1960s.

There are multiple spellings for the village of Karadja– including Gharajeh– in the English and German rug books describing their wonderful carpets and runners.

More spellings! “Karadagh rug or Karaja rug handmade in or near the village of Qarājeh (Karaja), in the Qareh Dāgh (Karadagh) region of Iran just south of the Azerbaijan border, northeast of Tabrīz.”

Karajeh weavers craft some of the finest rugs and runners made in Iran. Karajeh is a collection point on the western edge of the Heriz production area.

The rug is single wefted and has medium length pile.

Shipping will be $55 in continental U.S.          Or possible free pickup near Stockton – Sacramento – San Andreas – East Bay Area with prior arrangement.
