Mesmerizing large Turkish rug from Taspinar in central Anatolia. Strong bold colors with very fine detail and elegant weaving. This is a large and dramatic size for this style of rug, which are often woven as a wedding dowry or as an important family centerpiece.

Taspinar is located in central Turkey just south of the world famous region of Cappadocia– one of Turkey’s most touted tourist destinations. It is also located fairly close to Konya, which has been a source of illustrious Turkish carpets for several centuries.

This area in Anatolia produces a high quality wool with a silky feel. The rich lanolin in the wool is what makes the rug feel as if it was woven from silk. 100% natural wool. The design combines bold geometric elements with displays of plants and foliage.

Good condition with some normal wear in areas. Some spots of reddish dye diffusion, mainly on one end (photo 2). Because of the dramatic colors, primarily crimson and deep blue, the diffusion smudges are hardly noticeable. 1950s.

A fairly supple weave so not ideal for a super high foot traffic area without a simple mesh pad to help keep it in place on slippery tile or hardwood.

Fabulous old Turkish Hereke rug from an estate. Wonderful condition. It was a bit gray with normal soiling so I had it professionally washed. Came out beautifully with vibrant colors and white fringes. Fringes are in perfect condition — and long fringes often wear down first. The size is 8 ft. 2 in. by 4 ft. 8 in. (that measurement includes fringes).

Extremely intricate and balanced, with precise weaving. 1960s.

Hereke, near Izmit Bay in Turkey, is considered one of the finest rug making centers in the world. (Many would argue it has been the pinnacle of elite rug creation over the last century and a half.) The Emperor Sultan Abdulmecid I established the Hereke Imperial Factory in 1843 to produce carpets and fabrics exclusively for the Ottoman Court. Hereke designs were inspired by the motifs of traditional Turkish carpets as well as the more elaborate curvilinear compositions of Persia and Mameluke Egypt.

During the late 19th and early 20th century, Hereke weavers produced their enchanting masterpieces exclusively for the aristocracy of the Ottoman Empire as well as visiting dignitaries and heads of state. Hereke hand knotted carpets, many made from silk, were presented as gifts to the royal families of Japan, Russia, Germany and England. As Hereke carpets gained acclaim throughout Europe, demand steadily increased . Eventually, toward the end of the 1800s, production increased to a point where Hereke carpets became available in the markets of Istanbul.

The founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923 interrupted Hereke carpet production. The new Turkish leaders, spurning the perceived decadence of the Ottoman aristocracy, considered luxury carpets as frivolous for building a modern nation. The Hereke carpet industry declined from 1923 through the end of the Second World War. The early 1950s, however, became a renaissance for Hereke rug production. Master weavers resumed the craft, and looms were set up in the homes of local villagers who wove carpets on contract. Today Hereke continues creating exquisite handmade wool and silk rugs for discerning collectors worldwide.

SOLD — Large ‘Seljuk’ Turkish Rug — 12 ft 7 in. by 8 ft. 6 in. — $779

Large fantastic Turkish rug woven with 100% natural ‘kork’ wool. Excellent condition with no signs of wear anywhere. Wool retains its high lanolin content; the colors are bold but softer than they appear in the photos. Red field is more of a coral than a crimson. Long fringes are in perfect condition. The size is 12 ft. 7 in. (including the fringe) and 8 ft. 6 in. wide. About 12 ft. in length without the fringe.

Styled after ancient Seljuk carpets. There is also a town near Ephesus named Seljuk. (Also spelled Seljuq and in Turkish Selcuk –with a ch sound.) The Seljuk dynasty was one of the great formative civilizations of Anatolia.

“The Anatolian Seljuks were the founders of the first true Turkish state in Asia Minor. The Seljuks of Anatolia were responsible for one of the richest and most inventive periods in Turkish culture. They ruled over most of Turkey for almost two centuries, between the 11-13th centuries, from their capital in Konya. During that time, their refined, enlightened culture flourished throughout most of Turkey.”

The rug is soft and fairly thick. It came out of a high end rug gallery collection but has been in storage for the last 15 years or so. Fabulous art for the floor!

Highly detailed and finely woven vintage Kayseri rug from central Anatolia. Very good condition with a small repair on the side cord. Very little wear on the wool pile. Muted soft colors including brown, sage, blue, ivory and a few tiny accents of red.

The long cotton long fringe is original but shows little signs of wear. A little bit of light brown in a few spots on the fringe from slight dye diffusion when the rug was suspended for drying.

This is an estate rug that has been professionally washed. Enchanting art for your floor!

With its elegant interwoven design and muted colors, this large carpet would complement a range of styles from traditional and modern, to mid-century modern, Art Deco and Art Nouveau. Exact size is 12 ft. 4 in. by 8 ft. 6 in. — and that includes the longish fringe.

The Kayseri area is widely heralded for producing many of the finest handmade rugs in Anatolia and the world. 1960s – 1970s. In the book Contemporary Hand Made Turkish Carpets by Ugur Ayyildiz (1983), you can see a rug with an almost identical motif on page 41. In Turkey large rugs such as this one are known as Taban (over 6 square meters in size).
