Chinese blue rug with a quintet of reptilian dragons flying among Buddhist symbols and auspicious signs.
The condition of the rug is mint with no signs of wear. The only flaws I can find are a couple of penny size faint spots, probably coffee, that don’t show up even in closeup photos. (You can only find them by putting your nose on the rug under bright illumination.)
Depending on which direction the light strikes the nap of the rug, the central field of the carpet shows either as a deep blue or as a powder blue color. You can see this a bit in the photographs depending on where the camera was positioned.
The border is a deep navy blue, the dragons and the flying orbs are mainly brown and tan. The interior laced border shows as an intertwined dark blue and a silvery blue. Fringes are long white cotton in excellent condition. Photo with Morgan silver dollar shows the back of the rug and the fine tight weaving.
This rug is a blend of fine wool and silk woven onto tight cotton framework. Exact size is 9 ft. 7 in. (including fringe) by 6 ft. 1 in. wide. 1970s – 1980s.
This carpet could be used in a high foot traffic area but it is such a sublime piece of art that it deserves, in my opinion, to be displayed with care and respect.
Entrancing art for your floor!
Although the rug shows some affinity with Tibetan and Nepalese textiles, it was handwoven in the People’s Republic of China.
