Surreal vintage tribal rug from the village of Nahavond in the Hamadan District of central Iran. Red lions with upraised swords, birds, deer and other creatures inhabit the carpet.
Excellent condition with overall minor wear on the thick wool pile.
Nahavand rugs are like impressionistic or surreal paintings done in wool. Dark field colors with salmon, cream, rose, blue, reds, and blacks surrounding a central medallion. Classic abrash (variegation in dye color) in the field color.
The wide border features four different design borders, encircling the rug.

A range of bold flowers and vines crisscross the carpet.
Village weavers from the area around Nahavond create distinctive carpets woven nowhere else in the world.
The weavers generally prefer dark colors in the center surrounded by tans, reds and lighter colors in the borders.
The intertwined vines and flowers make for a surreal scene, almost like a Salvador Dali or Chagall painting.
