Amazing dark vintage tribal rug from the village of Nahavond in the Hamadan District of central Iran.
Truly excellent condition with almost no signs of wear in the thick wool pile. Appears to be some minor color pickup in the light border but nothing major.
Great size for one of these village rugs at — 9 ft. 6 in. by 5 ft. 3 in.
Dark field colors with saturated blues, reds, and blacks showcase a central blue medallion and wild animal imagery. Some eye-catching abrash (variegation in dye color) in the black field color.
Several surreal creatures — possibly floating lions, strange critters that look like lumpy dinosaurs, and some scattered birds.
The wide border features white lozenge or cartouche shapes that repeat, encircling the rug.
Natural wool on cotton warp.
Heavy for its size and suitable for a high foot traffic area of the house.
Aside from the dream-like animals and birds, a range of bold flowers and vines crisscross the carpet.
Village weavers from the area around Nahavond create distinctive carpets woven nowhere else in the world.
The weavers generally prefer dark colors in the center surrounded by tans, reds and lighter colors in the borders.
The intertwined vines and flowers, not to mention the floating animals, make for a surreal scene, almost like a Salvador Dali or Chagall painting.
Mind-blowing tribal art for your floor! 1970s .
