SOLD — Qashqai Leopard — Cheetah Rug — 6 ft. 5 in. by 3 ft. 4 in. –$729

Wonderful condition with almost no signs of wear. Dramatic stalking gold feline on red field. Stylized flowers surround the leopard or cheetah, all framed with tan corners and black and ivory border.

Some abrash (color variegation from different dye batches) in the red field, with which the weaver creates an artistic painterly effect. A small dye diffusion, barely noticeable, from an earlier wash, is the only flaw.

Large wild cats are a traditional Qashqai motif but they almost always depict lions. In regards to condition, quality, artistic detail, this carpet is exceptional. (Out of my personal collection.)

Woven by the Qashqai tribe in the Zagros Mountains of southwest Iran. 1960s — 1970s. 100% wool. The size is  6 ft. 5 in. by 3 ft. 4 in.

SOLD — Large Turkish Taspinar Rug — 11 ft. 9 in. by 6 ft. — $549

To view available rugs and art, please go to the SHOP section in the main menu.

Mesmerizing large Turkish rug from Taspinar in central Anatolia. Strong bold colors with very fine detail and elegant weaving. This is a large and dramatic size for this style of rug, which are often woven as a wedding dowry or as an important family centerpiece.

Taspinar is located in central Turkey just south of the world famous region of Cappadocia– one of Turkey’s most touted tourist destinations. It is also located fairly close to Konya, which has been a source of illustrious Turkish carpets for several centuries.

This area in Anatolia produces a high quality wool with a silky feel. The rich lanolin in the wool is what makes the rug feel as if it was woven from silk. 100% natural wool. The design combines bold geometric elements with displays of plants and foliage.

Good condition with some normal wear in areas. Some spots of reddish dye diffusion, mainly on one end (photo 2). Because of the dramatic colors, primarily crimson and deep blue, the diffusion smudges are hardly noticeable. 1950s.

A fairly supple weave so not ideal for a super high foot traffic area without a simple mesh pad to help keep it in place on slippery tile or hardwood.

11 ft. 9 in. by 6 ft. Please email me with questions or to arrange a purchase. You can also buy it right now in the Shop.

The rug is $549. Shipping is $55 or free local pickup.

SOLD — Moroccan Berber Tribal Rug — 10 ft. by 5 ft. — $525

To view available rugs and art, please go to the SHOP section in the main menu.

Eye-catching vintage Berber rug from Morocco with an array of diamonds and icons, forming a scintillating motif. As with many of the tribal Moroccan pieces from the Atlas Mountain region, there are tassels added on one end only.

Overall excellent condition with very minor wear. Natural saffron or turmeric dyes were used to create the deep yellow gold colors. Additional colors are crimson, ivory, green, and soft blue accents. Exact size is 10 ft. 3 in. by 4 ft. 10 in. 1960s.

Woven from 100% wool. Original ends and side cords — which are in very good condition. Vintage tribal Moroccan rugs are less common and highly sought after by collectors, dealers, and designers.

This rug has a soft woolen weave suitable for tribal nomads. The rug can be easily unrolled for a celebration, a meal, or to serve as the floor of a tent. In preparation for a move, the rug can be quickly folded and packed away.

This rug is perhaps not a suitable choice for a high traffic area of a home. It would work well in a bedroom or office. Add pillows and this rug could serve as a nomadic enclave for visitors to sit on the floor and share a meal.

Please contact me with questions or to arrange a purchase.  $525.    Shipping is $43 or free local pickup.

SOLD — Old Geometric Hamadan Rug — 7 ft. by 5 ft. $415

To view available rugs and art, please go to the SHOP section in the main menu.

Plush vintage triple medallion village rug from central Iran. Thick wool pile with minor wear. Some wear on one fringe and a little normal wear on the side cords. 1930s.

Natural wool on cotton warp. Two stylized human figures on the blue-black primary field.

The rug was professionally washed. No signs of any bleeding or dye problems when it was washed. A very solid rug that could be used anywhere — including a high foot traffic area. Most likely woven by a Kurdish or Azeri weaver in the Hamadan district of Iran.

Ends and side cords remain in very good condition– especially considering the age. Mainly or all natural dyes with the orange possibly a pleasantly muted synthetic. (Tribal weavers often used a commercial orange with local ‘organic’ dyes even a hundred or more years ago.)

Really solid rug with tons of tribal charm that could be plopped down in a high foot traffic area of the home.

Fantastic art for the floor! .

Excellent size for many spaces in the home! Exact size is  7 ft. 1 in. by 4 ft. 10 in.

SOLD — Kazak Rug — Green, Magenta & Blue — 8 ft. 9 in. by 6 ft. 3 in. $749

To view available rugs and art, please go to the SHOP section in the main menu.

Mesmerizing old vintage rug with blue and mint medallions on a red magenta field.

Possibly too bold for some–but the colors are really electrifying if you want to enliven a living space. Colors approach a psychedelic intensity.

Very good condition with even minor wear to the pile. Pile was clipped short by the weaver to show off the triple medallion Kazak motif and prominent floral borders. 100% natural wool. 1960s. Most likely from Karabakh (also Karabagh) region or Soviet Dagestan. Or possibly eastern Anatolia.

This is a rug that would make a statement in any room although not a perfect match for a paisley sofa and floral wallpaper. And not for the faint of heart. Exact size is 8 ft. 9 in. by 6 ft. 3 in.

Price is $749. Shipping is $43 or free pickup is a possible option.

Electrifying tribal rug from the Zagros Mountains of southwest Iran. This one showcases the boldest and most vibrant color palette possible in a handmade textile. One end is slightly curved upward in the photos because the rug was rolled up in storage, but this will flatten out as soon as it is walked on.

Very heavy rugged wool rug that is almost like a plank in its solidity. Could be used in a high foot traffic area of the home.

Fantastic geometric design with many intricate details. Traditional Qashqai medallions with tree of life motifs, and multiple icons arrayed across the entire carpet. Ivory, crimson, orange, green, and black are the primary colors. Classic Qashqai barber pole side cords.

The four ivory horse heads were inspired by the ancient statues at the ruins of Persepolis (closeup in fifth photo). Qashqai nomads often grazed their sheep near the site of the city, and incorporated its art into the iconography of their wool rugs.  100% natural wool. 1950s. Out of my personal collection.

Good condition with scattered wear and a few small repairs. A small 2-inch rather crude repair, most likely done in the village, is located in the central medallion (shown in penultimate photo–but not easy to spot). Photo with coin shows the back of the rug.

Despite small imperfections, this is a vibrant and powerful piece of tribal art work. Fantastic statement piece– mind boggling art for your floor!

The Qashqai are a confederation of 5 distinct tribal groups who banded together in a political alliance in the 19th century. Another confederation — the Khamseh (which means 5 in Arabic) — formed in the 19th century as a counterbalance to the Qashqai. The rugs of all of these tribes are quite similar in many respects.

The size is 8 ft. 8 in. by 5 ft. 5 in.  The rug is $769. Shipping is $63 or free with local pickup.

This is one of a small group of dazzling Persian bird motif runners from northwest Iran. They were woven in villages in the Rudbar district (also Roodbar), and feature blues, both dark and light, as the primary field color with birds and tree of life designs.

Expertly crafted with fine wool on cotton warp. Reds, turquoise, orange as accent colors. Excellent overall condition with almost no signs of wear. Small hardly noticeable repair on the side cord. 1970s.

This runner features a good deal of abrash (variegation in dye batch) in the darker colors and blues to render a painterly effect to the carpet.

Out of my personal collection. There are four of them in total and once they are gone, they are gone. It took me quite a while to assemble this group and I never see them these days. They are really wonderful tribal works of art from the mountains of northern Iran.

Rudbar means ‘by the river’ in Farsi. The Sepid river runs through the city of Rudbar.

Great opportunity for someone to pick up a couple of matched runners with a bird motif and fabulous tribal colors.

Price is $749. Shipping within continental U.S. is $45 (heavy rug). Local pickup is an option.

SOLD — Bakhtiar ‘Space Alien’ Tribal Rug — 9 ft. 1 in. by 4 ft. 6 in. — $599

BA0036_9-1x4-6_N1_18w

To view available rugs and art, please go to the SHOP section in the main menu.

Awesome geometric hooked medallion rug with strange humanoid figures. Based on dyes and weave, this is a Persian village Bakhtiari or possibly Luri rug. The motif is not a common one for the Bakhtiari as they tend to weave Heriz style medallion or floral garden type rugs for the most part. This would be a more common design around Shiraz and the Qashqai weavers of the Zagros Mountains.

If Swiss author Erich von Daniken had come across these mysterious humanoids on a rug (second photo), he might have claimed them as evidence of alien visitations to the Middle East in his book Chariots of the Gods. All kidding aside, they are odd little figures but very traditional. The same figures appear occasionally on hundred year old Malayer and Hamadan rugs. (Even more proof they must be aliens–they only have 2 or 3 fingers on each hand!)

Chariots of the Gods

Chariots of the Gods

Condition is generally very good with some minor wear on the pile. No repairs, weak spots, or odors.

Short natural wool pile woven onto cotton warp. 1960s. Rug could be used in a high foot traffic area of your home or office. Out of my personal collection. Size is 9 ft. 1 in. by 4 ft. 6 in.

Mind boggling cosmic space alien art for your floor!

SOLD — Mazlaghan Tribal Runner — 12 ft. 6 in. by 4 ft. — $385

TK0005_12-6x4_i10_06w

To view available rugs and art, please go to the SHOP section in the main menu.

Dazzling large village runner from Hamadan District of Iran. This is a traditional Mazlaghan ‘lightning’ motif — serrated gold lightning enclosing red medallions, black fields, and creating a vibrant geometric design.

The rug has quite a bit of abrash (variation in color due to different wool dye batches) — which creates muted areas as well as bold zones on the rug.

Wool on cotton warp & weft. Excellent overall condition with only minor wear. No holes, stains, or issues. Incredible art for your floor! Ready to use. This rug has a dense weave and can handle foot traffic. 1970s.

Very good size at 12 ft. 6 in. by 4 ft. Mazlaghan rugs are a personal favorite, but they are generally on the small side (3 by 5 feet or 4 by 6). Not easy to find a good-sized runner like this one.

Price is $385. Shipping is $43 or free pickup.

SOLD — Geometric Khamseh Hamadan Runner — 10 ft. 5 in. by 3 ft. 7 in. — $489

H0053_10-5x3-7_O30_04w

To view available rugs and art, please go to the SHOP section in the main menu.

Striking geometric tribal runner from the Khamseh area, northern Hamadan region. Gorgeous colors, and the blues and salmon in particular appear to be natural dyes. Very minor wear. The wool pile is fairly thick. The warp is natural cotton.

Very good overall condition. The rug has been professionally WASHED and is ready for the floor. 1950s — 1960s. Size is 10 ft. 5 in. by 3 ft. 7 in.

To add a little confusion, there is also a Khamseh confederation in the Fars District of southwest Iran. The confederation consists of five tribes (khamseh means ‘five’ in Arabic) and was formed as a counterbalance to the Qashqai. (Although Farsi is the official language of Iran, many other languages are spoken including Turkish, Kurdish, Armenian, Luri, and Arabic.)

Many rugs in the northern Hamadan area are woven by Kurdish weavers, and this is possibly true for this bold village rug.

The price is $489. Shipping is $39.

Most of the Shahsavan tribe lives in northwest Iran near the city of Ardabil and Dashteh Moghan. However, dispersed groups of Shahsavan also live in central Iran near Saveh, Karmsar, and Varamin. In Farsi, Shahsavan means “those who love the Shah”. This was a 17th century title bestowed on warriors from these tribes for their loyalty and diligence in defending the northern borders of Persia.

As well as beautiful geometric carpets, the Shahsavan weavers produce many functional pieces such as saddle bags, mafrash bags, and animal covers. These textiles are often woven in the kilim and soumak style.

This stunning Shahsavan geometric carpet was probably woven near Saveh, which is about 80 kilometers south of Tehran. The color palette and design elements share much in common with Shahsavan rugs from the more northern regions around Ardabil.

Wool pile woven onto cotton warp. Some very minor wear. Soft and harmonious colors including salmon, ivory, blue and green. A large and impressive room size tribal textile. Exact size is 10 ft. 6 in. by 6 ft. 7 in.

Price is $775. Shipping is $55 or free pickup is an option in this area.
