Electrifying tribal rug from the Zagros Mountains of southwest Iran. This one showcases the boldest and most vibrant color palette possible in a handmade textile. One end is slightly curved upward in the photos because the rug was rolled up in storage, but this will flatten out as soon as it is walked on.

Very heavy rugged wool rug that is almost like a plank in its solidity. Could be used in a high foot traffic area of the home.

Fantastic geometric design with many intricate details. Traditional Qashqai medallions with tree of life motifs, and multiple icons arrayed across the entire carpet. Ivory, crimson, orange, green, and black are the primary colors. Classic Qashqai barber pole side cords.

The four ivory horse heads were inspired by the ancient statues at the ruins of Persepolis (closeup in fifth photo). Qashqai nomads often grazed their sheep near the site of the city, and incorporated its art into the iconography of their wool rugs.  100% natural wool. 1950s. Out of my personal collection.

Good condition with scattered wear and a few small repairs. A small 2-inch rather crude repair, most likely done in the village, is located in the central medallion (shown in penultimate photo–but not easy to spot). Photo with coin shows the back of the rug.

Despite small imperfections, this is a vibrant and powerful piece of tribal art work. Fantastic statement piece– mind boggling art for your floor!

The Qashqai are a confederation of 5 distinct tribal groups who banded together in a political alliance in the 19th century. Another confederation — the Khamseh (which means 5 in Arabic) — formed in the 19th century as a counterbalance to the Qashqai. The rugs of all of these tribes are quite similar in many respects.

The size is 8 ft. 8 in. by 5 ft. 5 in.  The rug is $769. Shipping is $63 or free with local pickup.

SOLD — Persian Tabriz with Mahi Motif and Magenta Diamond — 11 ft. by 8 ft. — $949

To view available rugs and art, please go to the SHOP section in the main menu.

Striking Persian carpet from Tabriz in northern Iran. Fabulous condition!

The field design surrounding the central ivory medallion is a form of the intricate Herati arabesque that decorates many rugs in the Middle East. In the Tabriz area it is also known as a ‘mahi’ design–or fish–because the details in the pattern look like a school of fish flashing by.

I have had a few of these mahi Tabriz carpets over the years but they were typically pretty worn. This one is in fantastic condition with only the slightest hint of wear in a couple of tiny spots inside the amazing magenta diamond. The fringes are in absolutely pristine condition on both ends; white and unworn. Long cotton fringes often get nicked up and soiled in the life of a handmade carpet.

This is an amazing motif, in my opinion, with its combination of field details, its central floral medallion, and its elegant wide borders–all enfolded by a magenta geometric diamond that jets across the rug like a lightening bolt.

The motif is sometimes copied in Pakistani rug workshops; however, they tend to work with a completely different color and dye palette, and also employ different weaving techniques. Because of this, distinguishing the Persian Tabriz carpets from their Pakistani imitators is typically straightforward.

Exact size is 11 ft. 1 in. by 7 ft. 9 in. A vintage rug from around the 1970s but in spectacular condition. There is some lively abrash (variegation in dye colors) in the dark indigo blues of the borders. The rug displays a mix of natural and quality synthetic dyes. The blues and some of the accent colors are natural while the neon magenta and orange colors cannot be duplicated with vegetable or natural dyes.

Price of this Tabriz carpet is $949.
