Runner — Persian Pictorial Royalty and Horses Rug — 13 ft. 6 in. by 4 ft. 6 in. HOLD

Out of stock

Amazing vintage Persian pictorial rug from southwestern Iran. Woven as a huge supple runner and oriented like a tapestry.

The rug was woven in the Fars Province near the city of Shiraz, and depicts a traditional ‘royal’ scene.

The carpet displays a scene of horses, several women– one woman on horseback– and a child shown twice. This is an uncommon motif that dates at least back to the 19th century.

It represents a tableaux of stylized royal figures, and with the flattened perspective they are reminiscent of the kings, queens, and jacks shown on playing cards.

The stylized benign horses are rather like friendly cartoon figures. The primary colors are cream, burgundy (not red), blue, and a burnt orange.

Condition is excellent with almost no signs of wear– and very thick wool pile. The rug is, however, notably out of square on one end. This can often happen with vintage village rugs, especially those woven from 100% natural wool.

Last photo, with Morgan silver dollar, shows the backside of the rug.

100% natural wool including warp and weft. This is a fairly supple rug woven in a nomadic style.

Exact size is 13 ft. 6 in. by 4 ft.  in. 1970s – 1980s.

Shiraz, capital of the Fars Province, is one of the most beautiful ancient cities in the world. Farsi (also Persian or Parsi) is the language of the ancient Fars region and has become the official language of Iran.

Situated in southwest Iran in the Zagros Mountains, Shiraz has around 850,000 inhabitants. At an elevation of 1800 meters, is is roughly 200 kilometers from the Persian Gulf. The city produces and exports many fine rugs, including the tribal carpets of the Qashqai and Khamseh confederations.
