Stunning old vintage tribal rug from Morocco. Based on colors and motif, this one is probably from the village of Rehamna. 100% natural wool with long tassels from the braided warp on one end (they are usually only on one end). 1940s. (There is an old faded export tag that looks like it can be translated to 1951 in the Gregorian calendar.)

The reds have muted from sunlight and aging on the top side. (see last photo which shows back folded over front) Floating asymmetrical diamonds and geometric icons against the red field. This is heavy and thick but a softer supple weave lacking rigidity– so not ideal for a high traffic area. Similar in respects to the traditional tribal Qashqai gabbeh rugs of Iran.

Professionally washed a couple of years ago and not used since being cleaned.

Sad to let this one go from my collection but have to find homes for some of these fabulous old carpets. Enchanted art for your floor! 10 ft. 8 in. by 5 ft. 5 in. (includes tassels in length).

Price is $750.   Shipping is $43 within the continental U.S.

Stunning tribal rug from the Zagros Mountains of southwest Iran. Fantastic geometric design with many intricate details. Traditional Qashqai medallions with tree of life motifs and multiple icons. Ivory, crimson, green, and black are the primary colors.

Four corner medallions surrounding a central ivory medallion on a crimson field. 100% natural wool. 1950s. Out of my personal collection.

Very good condition with only minimal signs of wear. A vibrant and powerful piece of tribal art work! Reasonably heavy and solid for its size so it can handle high foot traffic. Fantastic statement piece– dynamic art for your floor!

The Qashqai are a confederation of 5 distinct tribal groups who banded together in a political alliance in the 19th century. Another confederation — the Khamseh (which means 5 in Arabic) — formed in the 19th century as a counterbalance to the Qashqai. The rugs of these tribes are quite similar in many respects.

SOLD — 1920s Antique Persian Sarouk Rug — 12 ft. by 9 ft. $2,795

SK0017_12-1x9_PPO70_05w SK0017_12-1x9_PPO70_10w

Gorgeous antique 1920s-1930s ‘American’ Sarouk rug from Iran. The rug is in remarkably good condition for its age. Overall, one of the best of this era that I’ve encountered. The ends and side cords are original! These rugs are highly prized by carpet collectors. Exact size is 12 ft. 1 in. by 9 ft. Natural wool pile on cotton warp.

Pile wear is minimal but with some scattered cotton knot heads (white dots). On one end the cotton kilim style ending is in fantastic condition; the other cotton fringe has a little fraying in spots but NO LOSS to the pile on either end of the rug. No repairs that I can find — front or back. Other than modest wear, the rug has amazingly few flaws. The side cord is slightly pushed under near one end. Possibly it was pressed up against a piece of furniture for decades. It is not noticeable and ridiculously minor but there is so little wrong with this rug that I have to think of something.

Although the rug is very clean, this price includes a free hand-washing if desired (turnaround time is about 10 days to 2 weeks for washing). The scattered white knot heads can also be touched up so they disappear upon request. Many rug galleries do these touch ups automatically on antique rugs but this rug has never had it done.

The rug remains amazingly solid and is suitable for a high foot traffic area. But perhaps it deserves a little pampering? The rug is absolutely guaranteed to be an authentic Persian Sarouk from 1920s to 1930s.

Yes, you can return it if you are not totally thrilled but I ask the buyer to handle the shipping cost (roughly $60).

Blue wefts (visible from the back) — one of the hallmarks of authentic antique Sarouk rugs. The rug’s primary color is a variegated deep rich rosy red with additions of blue, olive, and green.

Fantastic old vintage Turkoman Ersari main rug in excellent overall condition. (Waves in 4th photo are just from folding and will disappear quickly once used on floor.) Displays the fantastic Tauk- Nuska Gul medallions! (First and last photos.) 100% natural wool.

Out of my personal collection but I’ve never had any place to put it! Afghanistan or Turkmenistan origin. These are very hard to find in this condition.

Turkoman rugs are typically woven from 100% pure wool. They are a nomadic rug made by tribes in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and northeastern Iran. These tribes include the Salor, Saryk, Tekke, Youmut, Arabchi, Chodor, and Ersari tribes. These rugs tend to have a background that is red or redish-brown in color, and the motif is usually geometric.

Most Turkoman rugs feature the octagonal gul –either as large medallions or in a repeating array.
Gul is an old Persian word for flower or rose, and also appears in Turkish. Traditionally, distinctive guls indicated individual tribal affiliations.

Price is $1,175.00

Huge handmade Tibetan rug. Thick wool on cotton. Original retail price tag still attached — $7500.

Large fantastic Turkish rug woven with 100% natural ‘kork’ wool. Excellent condition with no signs of wear anywhere. Wool retains its high lanolin content; the colors are bold but softer than they appear in the photos. Red field is more of a coral than a crimson. Long fringes are in perfect condition. Styled after ancient Seljuk carpets. There is also a town near Ephesus named Seljuk. (Also spelled Seljuq and in Turkish Selcuk –with a ch sound.) The Seljuk dynasty was one of the great formative civilizations of Anatolia.

“The Anatolian Seljuks were the founders of the first true Turkish state in Asia Minor. The Seljuks of Anatolia were responsible for one of the richest and most inventive periods in Turkish culture. They ruled over most of Turkey for almost two centuries, between the 11-13th centuries, from their capital in Konya. During that time, their refined, enlightened culture flourished throughout most of Turkey.”

The rug is soft and fairly thick. It came out of a high end rug gallery collection but has been in storage for the last 15 years or so. Fabulous art for the floor!

This rug is on sale for $779. Free pickup is an option in the San Francisco Bay Area — including Oakland and Berkeley — or Monterey. Within the continental U.S., shipping will be $99.

SOLD — Russian Dagestan Sumak with Bird Motif — 10 ft. by 5 ft. 8 in. –$649

Vivacious village soumak from Soviet Dagestan in the Caucasus Mountains. This soumak was woven in the Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, the official name, by mountain tribal people for local use. Often these spectacular home weavings are given as a wedding dowry. 1960s. Exact size, including wool fringes, is 10 ft. by 5 ft. 8 in.

This soumak (several spellings are used) is in excellent overall condition with limited minor wear. This one appears to have been used primarily as a wall tapestry, which is not unusual in homes in the Caucasus where they are especially treasured.

No holes, repairs, odors, etc. It is 100% natural sheep’s wool and environmentally friendly. The overall medallion geometric design is very traditional; however, the addition of pictorial elements such as birds is an uncommon treat.

Sumaks are similar to kelims but the thread work for the embroidery is not cut tightly on the back side. (Last photo with Morgan silver dollar shows the back.) They are more durable than kilims for the most part. This is not a Turkish, Afghani, or Chinese version of a soumak. This is an authentic Caucasian soumak.

“In technical terms, Soumaks are flatwoven rugs. Their technique is related to that of kilims, but it is somewhat more complex, thicker in handle, and more durable as floor covering. As opposed to Kilim technique which consists of compacted weft facing simply running over and under the vertical wraps, Soumak weave runs the yarns around the warps in a serpentine pattern, over two, back one, over two back one, and so forth. The rows of this yarn facing or brocading are then separated by wefts like the rows of knots in pile carpets.

The origin of this technique is hard to pinpoint, but it is attested literally from one end of the rug-producing world to the other. The term Soumak is apparently a corruption of the name Shemaka, a town in the Shirvan region of the Caucasus, where such rugs, it is often claimed, were made. However Soumaks were made in various areas of the Caucasus and the region north of Kuba seems to have been a major center of their production.”

This is not a true pile rug so not really suited for a super high foot traffic area of the house. I would recommend a quiet living room, office, den or bedroom. (It could also be hung as a tapestry.) A simple rug pad, cut to fit and often a thin mesh, would help keep it aligned on slippery floors.

The sumak is $649. Shipping will be around $40 and pickup is free.

(This Heriz has been sold.)

Traditional Persian Serapi Heriz rug with a large central medallion. Fantastic vintage rug, extremely solid and heavy, with thick pile & a dazzling motif. Some pile wear from normal use. No holes or weak areas, etc. Some abrash (natural color variegation) in the reds and greens; also, moderate fading in the blacks along the border. Natural wool woven onto natural cotton. 1940s – 1950s.

Estate rug from Europe. Professionally WASHED! Clean and free of all odors. Very HEAVY! This rug can be placed in a high foot traffic area without worry. Extra PHOTOS available upon request!

This is an authentic Heriz rug from northwest Iran and was woven near Ahar. These rugs are produced in the villages scattered across the slopes of Mount Sabalan, northeast of Tabriz.

The Heriz rug has became one of the best known styles of Persian rugs in the world & is often copied. It is an extremely durable & hard-wearing rug. One of the alleged reasons for the toughness of Heriz carpets is that Mount Sabalan sits on a major deposit of copper. Trace copper in the drinking water of the sheep supposedly produces high quality wool. The copper makes the wool stronger and far more resilient than wool from other areas.

Heriz rugs originate in towns such as Ahar, Heris, Mehraban, Sarab (Serapi), Bakhshaish, and Gorevan. Many of the weavers in this region, which borders the old Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan, are native Turkish speakers.

The rug is $1,350.00. It can be picked up in person in the East Bay, Santa Cruz, or Montery. Shipping is an option but it will be around $125 or so with FedEx as the rug weighs over a hundred pounds. You can pay with a check, money order, or Paypal.
