Large one of a kind tribal rug from the Zagros Mountains of Southwest Iran.
Very good overall condition with some scattered wear on the pile. No holes or weakened areas, nothing major.
A geometric ‘eye-dazzler’ style rug woven with traditional Qashqai medallions at each corner. There are also a quartet of green horse heads, one at each corner.
Often these horse heads are highly stylized and are based on statuary in the ancient city of Persepolis. However, these horses are unusual as they are portrayed with bridals and appear fairly realistic. (Although green horses are a little uncommon. Artistic license.)
The central medallion contains small human figures, sheep, goats, birds.
There are also small peacocks, birds and animal icons elsewhere on the rug. Additionally, the rug displays tree-of-life motifs.
Bold colors, which are typical of Qashqai tribal rugs.
Woven from 100% natural wool — including the warp and weft — this is a very solid and somewhat rigid carpet. It could be placed in a high foot traffic area of the home without concern.

The exact size is 9 ft. 8 in. by 6 ft. 8 in. 1960s.
The Qashqai are a confederation of 5 distinct tribal groups who banded together in a political alliance in the 19th century. Another confederation — the Khamseh (which means 5 in Arabic) — formed in the 19th century as a counterbalance to the Qashqai. The rugs of all of these tribes are quite similar in many respects.
