Description
Amazing vintage tribal rug from the village of Nahavond in the Hamadan District of central Iran.
Unusually large for one of these village rugs at — 10 ft. 10 in. by 5 ft. 2 in.
Dark field colors with saturated blues, reds, and blacks showcase a central soft blue medallion and wild animal imagery. Eye-catching abrash (variegation in dye color) in the blacks and browns of the field colors.
Excellent thick pile with very little signs of wear. The many creatures include floating lions, strange creatures that look like lumpy dinosaurs, and numerous scattered birds.
The wide border features white lozenge or cartouche shapes that repeat, encircling the rug.
Natural wool on cotton warp.
Heavy for its size and suitable for a high foot traffic area of the house. The photos were taken in midday sunlight.
Aside from the dream-like animals and birds, a range of bold flowers and vines crisscross the carpet.
Village weavers from the area around Nahavond create distinctive carpets woven nowhere else in the world.
The weavers generally prefer dark colors in the center surrounded by tans, reds and lighter colors in the borders.
The intertwined vines and flowers, not to mention the floating animals, make for a surreal scene, almost like a Salvador Dali or Chagall painting.
Mind-blowing tribal art for your floor! 1970s — 1980s.
